THANK YOU MEMBERS FOR A GREAT
OTIS GIANTS MINI-FEST ‘07
The Otis Model Aircraft club members have again run a very successful Air Show despite a very bleak weather forecast. Our air Show has become one of the main events held each summer on Cape Cod. It is amazing how many people come up to myself and our members telling us how much they have enjoyed the show and have asked, “When is the next Air show”. All of this was made possible by dedicated club members promoting Model Aviation as the modern electronic sport of flying miniature aircraft.
The show accomplished its goal of providing a $1000.00 scholarship for a Falmouth student and a $500.00 donation to the Massachusetts Land Grant Fund. These donations also demonstrate our clubs participation in supporting Falmouth community events.
We had a total of forty-five members participate in the running of the show over three days from field preparation to final cleanup after the show, most of whom worked all three days. Nine of our members signed up as flyers, accounting for fifteen planes, five of which were Bill Lopes beautiful war birds. Ray Davis’s turbine jet and twin engine Cessna 310 were also crowd pleasers. Five of our members flew combat at our half time show, the spectators really enjoyed watching, most were hoping for crash !
We had twenty-seven pilots signed up with about fifty airplanes.
This was a pretty good turnout of pilots considering that the weather forecast for New England was for thunder storms on Saturday and Sunday. You all know that we actually had three days of very good flying conditions.
The IMAA Otis Giants is a special interest group (sig) within the Otis Model Aircraft Club (OMAC) and is dedicated to flying large scale aircraft. Our air show is sanctioned by both AMA and IMAA. High Flight IMAA Magazine will feature our air show in the winter issue. This year IMAA has granted OMAC $500.00 for hosting IMAA’S District I Mini-Fest. THANK YOU IMAA!
The Sandwich Lions club has again provided our show with their canteen services to our members and spectators in a professional manner. Their donation of $250.00 is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU LIONS!
Tents for this Air Show and previous shows were provided at no cost to the club by Tony DaCosta. THANK YOU TONY!
For the past six years our Air Show has been largely successful due the support of Sharon and Roy Clement of R/C Hobbies. Their participation in providing at cost our pilot and raffle aircraft and many other necessary things such as chairs, tables and storage of Air Show signs, etc: has proved to be an essential element of our Air Show. THANK YOU SHARON AND ROY!
All of the above would not be possible without the full cooperation of OMAC an AMA chartered club of over one hundred members. We are a club with many varied modeling interests i.e.: electric flying, helicopters, gliders etc. yet; all our members join together to make our IMAA Air Show a huge success. The air shows success has put Model Aviation on the map here on Cape Cod, some of the spin offs have been a forty per cent increase in club membership, and recognition by the Crane Wildlife Refuge of our steadfast support of environmental issues at Crane. THANK YOU OMAC MEMBERS.
Leadership is said to be the art of getting things done by people, we have been fortunate to have past and present highly motivated club officers in OMAC. Our past club president Ray Davis had for six years fought tirelessly to maintain our flying privileges at Crane . THANK YOU RAY! Our club President Bill Killen, Treasurer Mark Montella, and Safety Officer Bill Lopes are now providing outstanding leadership.
I will be passing the baton for the next years IMAA Air Show to Mark Montella, who I am sure will be a outstanding Event Director. I will at this time would like to name a few of our members who over the years have been largely responsible for success of the Air Show. Please forgive me if miss any one.
